There are some signs that will tell you when you need to repair vs. replace your toilet, and we think is it important that you know the difference. Please see below for more information about each case:
When to Repair
When Your Toilet Is Running
A running toilet is when water from the tank is continuously running into the bowl. This can become extremely annoying both because it is inconvenient and because it makes noise.
The Toilet Won’t Flush
Some of the causes of this issue could be:
- Not enough water in the tank
- A faulty flapper
- A clog
- A broken lift chain
Low Water Level
Whether in the tank or in the bowl, your water levels should remain consistent. If you notice lower than normal levels, check the tank shut-off valve to make sure it was not accidentally closed. If the water level is low in the bowl, you may have a partial clog. This can be identified by a plumbing expert. If you are noticing a lower water level, and water on the sides of your toilet, or on the floor, this could be a sign of a more serious issue.
When to Replace
Porcelain Crack or Scratches
Porcelain cracks, or even what seem to be superficial scratches, can actually be a big warning sign that you need to replace your toilet. Bacteria and dirt can build up in scratches and cracks, making it impossible to get your toilet truly clean. If you have any cracks in the porcelain, this could lead to bigger problems than dirt. A crack could expand, which could lead to leaks and water damage.
Your Toilet Requires Constant Repairs
One or two toilet issues are to be expected, but if you are frequently and consistently running into the same problem, this is a sign that a new toilet is needed.
The Toilet is Always Blocked
If your toilet is clogging consistently, this is a sign that you should look into buying a new one.
